How MaySpare Solenoid Works
- First, connect the black lead to the ground (12V negative). Then, apply 12V positive to the red lead, which will cause the solenoid to move into the "HOLD" position. This action is responsible for keeping your engine running. This process operates off the engine's ignition circuit. In this mode, the solenoid consumes about 8-12 watts of power. After being in operation for a few hours, the solenoid will gradually heat up to an approximate temperature range of 120-160F, even when left unattended on a bench overnight. This heating process occurs due to the continuous consumption of power by the solenoid, which remains in its "HOLD" position until such time as the power supply is disconnected.
- Secondly, when the ground (GND) connection is established and power is supplied to the white lead, the "coil" located within the solenoid experiences an attempt to draw more than 20 AMPS of current. This intense surge of electricity results in a substantial spark, which is a common occurrence in such high-current applications. This causes the solenoid to suck in and hold the engine components tightly. This "coil" has been specifically engineered for brief, sporadic usage and is solely designed to maintain its energized state during the period when the engine is engaged in the process of attempting to crank or start. This phase typically spans from a few seconds up to a maximum of approximately 30 seconds.
